Thinking of moving Off Grid? Start thinking about these questions.

Dreaming of living off-the-grid? A lot of research and planning has to go into successfully moving to an 'off-the-grid' lifestyle.

Off the Grid Living is a lifestyle choice that involves living independently and sustainably without relying on public utilities such as electricity, water, gas, or sewer. It is a way to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of modern life, and it has become increasingly popular in recent years as people seek to reduce their environmental impact and live more self-sufficiently. Off the Grid Living provides many benefits such as reducing energy bills, increasing independence, and improving quality of life.  However, off the grid living takes a lot of preparation and planning up front.

Here are a few important questions to consider before making that move:

πŸ”Έ How will you supply power to the property? Living "off-the-grid" means that you'll be off the local power system. So, you'll need to look into using solar and/or wind power. You'll also need to consider a power storage system.

πŸ”Έ What type of home will you put on your off-the-grid property? A-frame, shipping container, yurt, tiny home, an earthship home? It's important to make sure you've found land with the appropriate zoning and building codes that allow for the type of home you want.  Check out our FREE Zoning Guide to help you navigate all the county specific zoning rules and regulations

πŸ”Έ How will you dispose of waste? What will you do about a septic system or is an alternative system allowed by the county?

πŸ”Έ How will you supply water to the property? How will you source potable water (drinking water)? Will you need a water collection system?  Check out this blog post to learn more about wells.

While getting away from it all and living off-grid can be a great way to practice sustainable living, give you a sense of being self-sufficient, and reduce your carbon footprint - there are a lot of things to think about prior to buying an off-the-grid property.  If you’re unsure where to start with buying property to support your off grid lifestyle, download our FREE Ultimate Guide to Buying Land.
